Tie-Top Newborn Beanie

by Jen from Tie Dye Diva via Sew Mama Sew

Tutorial & Pattern - Babies need lots of soft hats! How about this tie-top beanie? This tutorial makes a size newborn hat for babies up to about 9 pounds, and uses so little fabric; it’s a great project for re-purposing old tees or other knit items with at least 25% stretch.Enjoy your tie-top beanie!

Be sure to cut these so the width of your hat goes in the stretchiest direction of the fabric. Also cut 2 strips for the hat band from the same or contrasting/coordinating fabric, each 2.5″ long x 7″ wide. Be sure the 7” measurement is going the stretchiest direction.

2. Use a 1/4” seam allowance throughout. Place the hat pieces right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving the bottom open. Also place your band pieces right sides together, and sew the short edges. When sewing knit, you should use your lightning bolt-shaped “stretch stitch” or a narrow zigzag in places where your hat will be stretching to ensure that your seam will stretch along with the fabric. For this hat, at least the curved sides of the main piece and the band should be sewn with a stretch stitch. The ties portion can be sewn with a slightly longer-than-normal straight stitch.

3. Turn the main portion of the hat right side out and poke the ties out with a long thin object like a chopstick. Fold the band in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Finger press the seams open.

4. Place the band around the main portion of the hat, raw edges aligned, and match up the side seams. Pin all around, then sew this seam using a stretch stitch.

5. Flip the band down into place and press the hat, pressing the seam allowances upward. Trim any unruly seam allowances if needed. Tie the top ties into a square knot (left over right and under, right over left and through!).
